JCU Central Plaza

RECREATION AND LEISURE PROJECT

Located in the James Cook University Townsville campus, this $5 million project opened in 2020 and was built to be an academic and social meeting spot.

Aboriginal artworks were a core element of its design, with an impressive 5mx3m screen featuring evenly lit artwork by Megan Cope and dual conic roof.

Ashburner Francis featured heavily in the lighting and electrical design process which began back in 2017, requiring a total of 20,000 design and construction personnel hours spent on the project. For its lighting efforts, Central Plaza won the 2021 IES Lighting Design Award.
